What happens when you combine fruit trees with tulips? The very moment the fruit trees start to blossom, a magical atmosphere is created. I love fruit trees a lot. There are four of them in my garden. The plum tree always flowers first. The blossom is white. I have planted early tulips underneath the plum tree. My favourite tulip is Flaming Purissima. Blanchefleur, the hundred-leaved rose.

In the 17th century, Dutch breeders developed many roses. These roses are generally known as Rosa centifolia; the hundred leaved rose. In those days, the stuffed roses were very popular and were often portrayed on impressive flower still lives. A hundred leaved rose, how romantic I thought. Pruning willows. A truly Dutch job.

Today I will not tell you about my own garden, but those of our friends instead. Because, what do you do when you have to prune 20 willows and you have little time at your hands? Well, you send your friends an invitation to get together and work a little in exchange for a delicious meal. Of course we all accepted. Pruning willows, is it not truly Dutch? On the scheduled day the sun was shining brightly. We could not wait to get the work started. After a short briefing over a cup of coffee in the kitchen, we all started right away. First of all the branches of the willow were cut off with a chainsaw. The so-called “drag team” lugged the branches that came off into the yard. February. The garden looks brown. But when you look closely, the first tulips have emerged from the soil. I grow them in a blue painted tin and put them on the table in front of the kitchen window. The honky tonk blues

I have happy memories about the The Rolling Stones song Honky Tonk Woman. So when last October I spotted botanical tulips at the flower market, called “Honky Tonk”, I just had to buy these. Honky Tonk; a funny name for a tulip. Immediately the chorus of the song starts singing in my head…. “It's the honky tonk women Gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues” Back home as I plant the tulips in the grass basket, again the chorus of the song starts singing in my head! And every time and time again as I walk by the basket, the chorus starts in my mind. Sometimes it stays in my head the whole day. I even made my own lyrics to it: “It’s the honky tonk TULIP Gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues” But there is more to come. After a winter of waiting (and singing), the tulips are in bloom. GGBD January. A walk in the garden.

Until now, the winter has been mild. Walking outside I can hear the birds singing. They make typical spring sounds. Do they think it is spring already? To enjoy the garden I have to go down on my belly. Snowdrops are blooming in the front garden, the first herald of spring. These snowdrops are called Galanthus Elwesii. They are more resistant to dry conditions and are slightly larger than regular snowdrops. Galanthus Elwesii is showing off. I love that in this time of the year. Next to the snowdrops is a rose. I can see some rosebuds already! Soft pink cyclamen are blossoming under the plum tree. How cute do these little flowers look. In a pot, a little bit further away, I see leaves of anemone Coronaria ‘The Bride’. They will bloom together with the tulips 'White Triumphator'. One day at Hidcote Manor Garden.

Do you also gasp for flowers in this time of the year? That is why I search for pictures of flowers in my computer files. Doing so the pictures of Hidcote Manor Garden appear. Hidcote. Just what I need right now! We visited this garden again last summer. In my opinion it is one of the most beautiful gardens in England. Years ago, we visited this garden too. As we have passed the pay desk, we step into the room of Major Laurence Johnson who used to be the owner. I cannot remember I have visited this room before. Did I miss it the first time? My husband and I agree that we most certainly would like to live in this room. If you could just sit behind his desk - which you are not allowed to! - you would have a magnificent view over the garden. We leave the house and enter the garden. An ode to my pear tree.

"There is a pear in front of my window," I used to sing. My two daughters immediately shouted in unison: "Grandma song!!!" What is a Grandma song you might ask? A It is a Dutch song, so it is boring. B It is an old-fashioned song, so it is bad. C Mom, WE DO NOT WANT TO HEAR IT! My daughters do not live under the same roof anymore, so I sing (without comment) in spring and autumn this “Grandma song”. I like my pear tree very much. I love its rough bark trunk, its erratic winter silhouette, the snow-white blossom in spring and the fruit in autumn. I think its enough reason to be singing about this tree. "The switch".

Half May is a time of big changes. In one week the garden has changed completely. Every year, I am surprised again about the metamorphosis of the garden! "The switch" I call this period. "The switch" from tulips to roses. The tulips are all gone now. Instead, the cream coloured rose Frühlingsduft is in full glory. Which delight to smell the roses again. I could be sitting a whole day underneath it. Well, if there were no such mean thorns that is! And then the "switch" from cold spring weather to tropical days. After a cold spring, last week we finally had some warm weather (30 degrees C). Iris Hollandica has over blown faster than usual, but who cares? They were beautiful. Iris Germanica is flourishing too. I supported every heavy flower stem with an iron stick. If not, they would certainly break down with a lot of wind. The colour project. Blue

I have a fascination for women who dye their hair in a bright colour. So I started photographing this coloured hair and started my colour project, meaning that I link the particular hair colour with a plant in my garden. This time: Blue. On the hottest summer day of 2018 I see her on the edge of the fountain of hotel l'American. (Amsterdam) I am sitting in the tram, but don’t hesitate. I quickly leave the tram before she jumps into the water! The blue haired is a cheerful young American woman. She wears John Lennon sunglasses and a wide, long skirt. It's a hippie. When I ask her if I may take a picture of the blue hair, her friends say teasingly and a little jealous 'Yo-yo .... You’re a model! ' Then I ask why she chose the blue colour.
