Say yes to the shopping trolley.

Rosa 'Silver Anniversary'

A long time ago I decided never to buy a nimble shopping trolley. I simply don’t want to be seen with such a thing. NEVER. But whilst visiting the Hampton Court Flower Show in England last year, I had to review that strong opinion of mine.....

Hampton Court Flower Show is a fantastic experience for every gardener. Really, every garden item is for sale there. You will find show gardens for inspiration and you can buy many plants, including very special ones. AS you may have guessed this show takes place in the back garden of the Hampton Court Palace. The show grounds are huge.

I want to buy a rose to remember this special event. So I go to the rose pavilion first. I ask for some advice from the people of Fryers-roses. The kind salesman shows me one rose after another. It is difficult to choose; all roses simply look beautiful. After long deliberation I decide to buy the white tea rose 'Silver Anniversary'. I can already picture it, one white rose in a vase. Trés Chic!

Pleased with this first buy I continue my walk on the show grounds, the rose in my arms. However, the rose turns out to be a lot heavier than I thought and moreover it is also very inconvenient! As I look around me, not to miss anything of this garden spectacle, I slam the rose in the face of a gentleman. "What a lovely rose you have", he says politely.

Hetty, I exhort myself, this is not the right way to go about. I might be tough with that rose in my arms, but I just have to buy a shopping trolley! RIGHT NOW! So, after all those years, I finally give up my strong opinion on trolleys and buy one to transport my new rose in.

But than again the trolley turns out to be a good excuse to buy much more plants! I stack the plants up in the trolley until no room is left. At 5 o'clock I stumble into the parking with all my purchases. Tired, broke, but ever so happy.

Back home I plant 'Silver Anniversary' in the garden. The leaf’s look healthy and although the stems seem a bit limp, there are a lot of buds. Unfortunately, the rose is sensitive to wind. Probably because I planted the rose to close to the fence, which makes the outer petals rub against it and become brown. But I do not want to complain about my rose 'Silver Anniversary'. The rose performs extremely well in a vase. And it reminds me of a fantastic day.

And the shopping trolley? Well I take it with me to every garden fair. So handy

  1. I bought a shopping trolley yesterday. It's a co-incidence I read your blog this morning. I bought it because I plan on going to this huge garage sale this summer. I can put a lunch, water and my wallet in it. I can't wait to use it.
Also, I plan on buying some more rose buses this year.
