Unpronounceable Allium sphaerocephalon.

Allium sphaerocephalon
I always hope that nobody asks for the name of the allium shown above. It is Allium sphaerocephalon. What an awful name! Who comes up with such an idea? I never seem to get it pronounced properly.

Allium sphaerocephalon has been in my garden for a long time now. A couple of years ago I reorganized the border. Nowadays the bulbs are scattered everywhere. That gives a natural, even more beautiful effect.

In the middle of summer, the spherical flowers are starting to colour. In the beginning the top is dark red and the bottom is green. Just as if they were dipped in paint. After some time the entire flower turns into a dark red colour.

This bulbous plant simply fits everywhere. The flowers are not that big, about 3-5 cm across. That is why it is wise to plant several together. You do not have to bother about the price, because the bulbs are not that expensive Jan Deen. The decorative flowers can also be dried and they perform fantastic in a vase too.

Conclusion:

Except for the unpronounceable name, there is actually nothing wrong with this bulb!

  2. I too have this allium with the unpronounceable name! I like it because it blooms later than the other allium varieties in my garden and thus provide colour when most other plants have spent their blooms already.
    Best wishes,
